Does the thought of going into work on Monday morning fill you with dread? Would you give anything to just stay at home and somehow collect your paycheque anyways? You’re not alone! People all over feel different degrees of the Monday blues.
While it may feel like an integral part of life, it doesn’t actually have to be that way. There are many things you can do to make the start of your work week an exciting time you actually look forward to.
Follow these strategies to help make your Monday feel like Friday –
#1: Unplug for the Weekend
Do you come into work on Monday feeling you never left? That might be because you never really did. If you were chained to your laptop or cellphone all weekend with work related items, then you never really gave yourself time to recharge your batteries, and get ready for the next week ahead.
Whenever possible, unplug from all electronic devices and enjoy a bit of a digital detox. Get outside, see some friends or loved ones, and make the most out of your weekend. The farther away work feels, the more new and interesting it will be on Monday.
#2: Bring in a Breakfast Treat for your Coworkers
Chances are, you aren’t alone in wanting to go home as soon as you arrive to work on Monday. So spread some cheer around by bringing in a breakfast treat for the crew. Some probably didn’t even eat breakfast yet, and low blood sugar can cause low moods. Additionally, studies show that random acts of kindness can make you feel even better than doing something for yourself!
#3: Tackle the Difficult Tasks First
Are there a few tasks you’re dreading? Create a to-do list on Friday, and then do them first thing on Monday. Not only will it give you a boost to have them finished, but when your energy starts to wane later in the day, it’s ok because the most important tasks of the day are already done!
#4: Eat Lunch Outside
When you eat lunch at your desk, it feels like you never really left work-mode. Eating outside and being exposed to nature can give you a boost of energy that will help see you through the rest of the work day. For an added bonus, go for a bit of a walk after you eat!
#5: Be Positive
Start your day off on a positive note by creating a list of what you’re thankful for. There’s even a Gratitude Journal App to make it easy! Things could be a lot worse than going into work on Monday, so it’s beneficial to fill your head with all the things that make you happy instead.
Did you go into work aiming to be positive, and then your co-worker started complaining about your boss? Try to redirect the conversation or distance yourself from it, because negativity is contagious, and before you know it they’ll have brought down your positive vibes.
#6: Have Fun After Work Plans
Create a post-work plan of something fun to do. Whether it’s meeting up with a friend, seeing a new movie, or just ordering in your favourite take out and binge watching Netflix. Looking forward to something can help create a positive outlook for the day.
